It may come as no surprise that drug and alcohol use is prevalent throughout the United States. Many of us understand the risks of consuming drugs or alcohol recreationally, but reasons unbeknownst to us, we participate anyway. Even legal drugs like alcohol and tobacco cause significant problems nationwide.

The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) released statistics showing that abusing alcohol, illicit drugs, and tobacco costs $740 billion annually, which relates to lost productivity, crime, and health care.

Unfortunately, like the rest of the country, Florida has been struck by the opioid crisis affecting the United States. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reported more than 70,200 drug overdose deaths in the United States as of 2017. The rate equals 21.7 per 100,000 persons. Among those, 47,600 involved opioids, and the sharpest increase stems from fentanyl and fentanyl analogs.

That number increased dramatically in Florida by 5.9 percent from 2016 (23.7 per 100,000 in 2016) to (25.1 per 100,000 in 2017). In Florida, healthcare providers wrote 60.9 opioid prescriptions for every 100 persons, which is higher than the national average of 58.7. Still, it is much lower than the rate in 2006 when the information became available.

Unfortunately, many of those struggling with substance abuse reside in Osceola County, Florida. Many of those struggling with addiction admit themselves to drug rehab. Let’s take a look at the numbers of those seeking help.

Drinking has become a cause for concern in Osceola County and surrounding areas. In 2016, alcohol was involved in 44 percent of the state’s drug-related overdoses. A report also shows that 22.5 percent of Florida residents over the age of 21 engage in binge drinking. Despite its legality, alcohol abuse can lead to a myriad of issues. Individuals who abuse alcohol are much more likely to engage in risk behaviors, such as unsafe sex and driving under the influence.

Fentanyl is also a significant concern in Osceola county, and an estimated 433 people died of an accidental overdose in 2018 alone.

It accounts for a 20 percent increase over the previous year. Cocaine has also established itself as a major issue because the drug is more commonly cut with fentanyl, which increases the chances of overdose significantly.
