The United States, as a whole, has struggled mightily with drug addiction in recent memory. In 2017 alone, 70,237 drug overdose deaths occurred nationwide. The rate of overdose deaths increased considerably by 9.6 percent at a rate of 19.8 per 100,000 in 2016 to 21.7 per 100,000 in 2017. Opioids are the leading cause of drug overdose deaths, and they were responsible for more than 47,600 overdose deaths in 2017, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC also mentions Florida was one of the states that saw a significant increase in drug overdose deaths from 2016 to 2017. Areas in Florida that saw a noticeable increase were places like Volusia County. Fortunately, despite the rise, drug rehab has become easy to access for citizens of the county.

Healthcare providers in the state of Florida are still writing prescriptions above the national average, which could be causing these inflated numbers. Although the numbers have decreased significantly since they became available in 2006, it’s something that should be looked into further.

Although these numbers are declining, Volusia County is still struggling with substance abuse and addiction. We understand that it may be hard to admit that you have a problem, but getting drug rehab may be the only option that saves your life.

One of the primary drugs behind the drug epidemic in the United States is fentanyl. Unfortunately, Volusia County’s drug of choice is one of the most deadly known to man. The national death rate from fentanyl has increased 1,125 percent between 2011 and 2017, which is a staggering statistic.

Volusia County is among the leaders of fentanyl use throughout the state of Florida, and in 2017, it resulted in 64 deaths.

The statistics also show that men are more likely to use the drug than women.

While fentanyl may be the main culprit in Volusia County, other drugs like cocaine continually impact the state.

Due to its close proximity to South America, Florida remains a hub for drugs to enter, which affects citizens in all counties nationwide.
