Alcohol use disorder, or what used to be termed alcoholism, is a condition that requires an alcohol addiction treatment program to stop its effects from ruining lives. Like any substance, alcohol can be abused. When it is frequently misused, it can alter brain chemistry, causing individuals to become addicted. This disease requires professional support to heal properly. When someone stops drinking for an extended amount of time, they may feel as if they are “cured” from this disease. This is not the case, however. There is a difference between recovery and sobriety to keep in mind.
What It Means To Be Sober
Recovery and sobriety are two different scenarios that could happen if someone who suffers from alcoholism decides it is time to stop drinking. Sobriety is the state of not drinking, but it is done on one’s own with no treatment measures. Many people who become sober refocus their energy upon another substance or action, often leading to another type of addiction altogether. They do not have the background about their disease explained to them, and they are more intent on remaining sober than seeking a residential treatment program from an outside source. Unfortunately, while the action of stopping drinking is commendable, it does not always last.
At Harmony Hills, we understand the processes you need to go through to ensure success with everlasting sobriety and recovery. We use a phased approach beginning with two weeks of residential detoxification if needed. Care is individualized. We provide clients with evidence-based science to help them understand “the why” behind their addictions. Then, we focus upon a full recovery plan tailored especially for the client. We encourage family therapy sessions and other holistic approaches during the recovery process, along with traditional treatment services. We also provide therapy in individual and group settings to aid in sobriety and recovery success. Some of our programs include:
- Residential mental health treatment
- Partial hospitalization program (PHP)
- Family therapy program
- Inclusive alumni network
What It Means To Go Through Recovery
The main difference between recovery and sobriety is that someone in recovery is being treated professionally. This can be as simple as going to 12 step therapy programs and speaking to others about alcohol struggles, or as extensive as going to a rehabilitation facility for a complete education and therapy for alcoholism. Recovery processes give the alcoholic a firm understanding of why they do what they do. The treatment goes into the background of the disease, helps find coping mechanisms to handle trigger events, and provides therapy sessions of all types to learn more about the disease. Recovery also means physicians can monitor the alcoholic’s body and mind as they withdraw from alcohol if needed.
Why Each Are Needed For Success
You need to go through recovery and sobriety together to become successful at stopping the drinking of alcohol. Being sober is the process of not drinking for an extended amount of time. Still, recovery efforts are needed throughout to ensure the alcoholic does not fall back on old habits too easily. During recovery at an alcohol detox center program, underlying issues that contribute to alcoholism are discovered and dealt with accordingly. This ensures that the alcoholic has a better chance of stopping their behavior without relapse. Sobriety is then achieved successfully. The process of stopping drinking and becoming sober is more of a risk for someone if they do not have treatment to back up their actions.
