Deciding on the right treatment for you or a loved one can quickly become overwhelming, but finding the best treatment option is the first step towards recovery. At Harmony Hills, our admissions team helps clients become comfortable with the details of entering and participating in our rehabilitation programs. They will discuss the options that are available to facilitate recovery. Two options many clients consider are our partial hospitalization program (PHP) or residential treatment program. Understanding each option enables you to make an informed decision about your recovery.
Substance Abuse Treatment Options
Understanding how substance abuse impacts the brain may help you decide between a PHP or residential treatment option. Using drugs or alcohol changes a person’s brain. The longer the substance abuse, the harder it is to stop. When people use drugs or alcohol, they inhibit the release of neurotransmitters in the brain. Because the brain believes there are insufficient neurotransmitters, it rushes to create more. The increase in neurotransmitters changes how the brain’s pleasure and reward centers work. Long-term use of harmful substances restructures the brain, so it only finds pleasure when using drugs or alcohol. Sometimes, drugs or alcohol result in physical dependence.
Detoxification or detox at a drug detox center is the physical and mental process of removing a person from a harmful substance. Going through withdrawal can be uncomfortable and painful. In some cases, life-threatening complications may occur, such as elevated heart rate, blood pressure, or body temperature. Depending on your substance abuse and medical history, an inpatient detox program may be necessary.
Residential Treatment
Detoxification may be conducted as part of an inpatient treatment program. Inpatient programs remove clients from their daily environment and place them under medical professionals’ care for treatment duration. Once detox is complete, clients may consider a residential program that relieves them of the stress of their daily lives. Stepping away from life’s pressures creates a space for positive change.
As with all of Harmony Hills programs, the residential treatment program focuses on a holistic recovery approach. An overall treatment plan is designed for each client within the first two weeks. The client-specific plans use evidence-based treatments such as:
- Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
- Traumatic Incident Reduction Therapy (TIR)
- Mental Health Treatment
As clients move through treatment, they are introduced to nutritious diets and physical health routines. Meditation classes, including yoga, are also available. Residential treatment programs are an excellent option for clients wishing to move towards a fresh start and a substance-free life.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Clients in partial hospitalization programs no longer reside in a treatment facility; however, they participate in highly structured programs conducted at the facility. Clients spend up to 20 hours a week, usually five days a week, in treatment at our facility. For clients living outside a rehab facility, PHP can provide needed support as they work towards recovery.
The substance abuse treatment program is an intensive treatment option for those that cannot use an inpatient treatment program. It helps clients understand their triggers and develop behaviors that lead to a healthy life. The added support that a PHP provides allows clients to recover as they return to daily life.
