Drugs and alcohol affect the frontal lobe, or reasoning center of your brain, and can cause most people to participate in risky behavior. This can include unprotected sex, sharing needles, stealing from friends and family, and criminal activity. What is moral reconation therapy? It is a form of behavioral therapy that is very effective in treating men and women who repeatedly abuse drugs and alcohol and are more likely to steal or harm others in the pursuit of more drugs. Moral reconation therapy helps those with a serious addiction who have little self-motivation to quit.
At Harmony Hills, we provide moral reconation therapy (MRT) for our clients who have repeatedly relapsed after court-appointed or voluntary addiction treatment. MRT works on changing their moral reasoning and helping them see how their behavior is harming themselves and others. This is very beneficial for clients who lack a reason to quit, typically due to an underlying mental health illness like depression or PTSD. Call 855.494.0357 today if you feel our moral reconation therapy program can help you or a loved one struggling with substance abuse.
What is Moral Reconation Therapy?
What is MRT? Moral reconation therapy is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that promotes moral reasoning, better decision-making, and more appropriate behavior. It was originally developed back in 1985 for men and women in the criminal system who have a habit of drug and alcohol abuse and criminal behavior. It focused on the moral aspect of addiction and the negative behaviors that it created. Those who participated in the program showed a significant reduction in abusing drugs and alcohol and criminal activity.
Today, MRT is useful in helping men and women struggling with substance abuse created by depression, PTSD, or other mental health disorders. It is a sixteen-step program that includes group and individual therapy where clients receive homework to complete before each group session. They will either move up to the next step or have to repeat the homework if they do not meet the assignment’s goals.
At Harmony Hills, we provide our clients with various evidence-proven therapies, including moral reconation therapy, to benefit their recovery. We assess each client’s physical and mental health and use that information to create an effective treatment plan to help them reach their recovery goals.
